My brother is coming over to my apartment this Thursday, and bringing his new wife with him, who is Japanese (he's a Marine stationed in Okinawa). I'm very excited to meet her, and I want her to feel welcome in my home. Does anyone know of any extra special things I can do to help her feel welcome, or maybe some Japanese cultural thing I can do?

My step mother is from the Philippines, and what makes her comfortable is us being real. I don't try to "do" her customs, I ask her to teach me her customs. It shows you care but you don't look like a dork trying to be something you're not. Most Asian cultures remove their shoes, that would probably help, but other than that, just do your thing and ask her to tell you all about her family traditions, she would probably love to share them. then you know what is special to HER. Ask your brother what her fave wine or drink is, have it on hand, make YOUR specialty for her, that will make her feel welcome. Good luck

My suggestions would include (1)greet her in Japanese... "ko-ni-chi-wa", (2)do the Japanese bow...bending your body forward at your hips and (3)have sushi or fish for lunch and/or dinner. Also, "doe-mo Ah-ri-ga-to" for thank you very much and "sa-yo-na-ra" for goodbye. if you do them well, fine. If not, all of you may have a good laugh. Have a Merry Christmas!

go get sake.... :) or make sushi... or just smile and say nice to meet you...and enjoy the time you have with your brother and go get to know the sister-in-law...
