I recently found my dog in a pound about 2 hours from where I live. I have been searching for him for over a year and have finally been reunited with him. The problem is, he has heartworms now...and I am moving to Italy on January 2nd. Can he go with me overseas...even though he has this health problem? I would certainly have him on regular treatment while over there...but would the plane allow it...or would Italy even allow him to enter?

happy you found your pet! sad he now has heartworms. i would call the animal department in italy and see what their regulations are. some regions are heartworm free and will not allow an infected animal in. take him to your vet and have him checked over and see what your vet thinks about transporting him health wise. the best thing would be if you could have him stay with a friend and have him treated here and then shipped to you once heartworm free. good luck and enjoy. if not please feel free to have me shipped to italy, i am heartworm free. :)

Italy requires that your pet be micro chipped and vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days prior to travel.

Your veterinarian must then complete the proper EU veterinary certificate and attach the rabies certificate

You probably need to call the airlines, but I don't think it will be a problem. You just have make sure he is strong enough to handle the stress of the altitude on isolation. You might want chat with your vet on the strain the altitude could have on his heart.
