I always see, in drawing books, diagrams that show proportions relative to head lengths and the diagrams always show a person standing straight up with no foreshortening. Is there any mathematical way to apply these figures in foreshortening (3Dimensional Space) or are these proportions just to be used loosely as reference material when confronting the problem of foreshortening in those instances?

To Nana: Thank you for your help but I thought I should let you know that many artists incorporate math into their art, All you have to do is look at old Da Vinci drawings and you will see alot of math, look at Escher, look at Islamic art, Celtic Knots, etc...It isn't in high fashion these days to do so, but that doesn't make it illegal.
To Somebody Real: I take it from your advice that you are saying I should measure by eye and forget the math.
