I need recommendations on good generic batteries. Besides the named brands (duracell, energizer etc) I typically take CVS or Walgreens batteries when they are on sale. What is your experience with CVS vs Walgreens? And recommend any other generic batteries that have provided good value (good life for half the price of named brands).

I'd suggest you switch to rechargeable NiMH batteries and save lots of $$ over the life of whatever you're using the batteries in. You'd also stop dumping all those toxic chemicals in the local landfill.

The rechargeables are typically only 3x the price of regular alkalines, but they can be recharged 100's of times. A generic charger that can charge all sizes of batteries costs only $15 or so (link below). If you double up on the batteries, you can always have a fresh set charged.
