I have a 1yr old boy whos stools (poo) are dry, and crumbly. There rarely is a "normal" stool. The generally come out in VERY small balls and one large clump and they generally are not as dark as you would think normal.

Any ideas? I'm wondering if this should be seen by a doctor imediatly or?

What goes in ,comes out.
What are you feeding him?
Start a food/poo diary
Make sure he has lots of pure water too.

It's his diet. Too much milk and cheese can cause constipation. Sounds like too much milk since it light color. He should be getting juice, baby cereal, jar foods, water and some table food at this stage, depending on how many teeth he has.

You can try giving him a little prune juice or the actual prune to eat for immediate relief and use a little vaseline on a rectal thermometer to help ease the discomfort when he pushes, this should work in a matter of hours.

Then, going forward give him lots of water, juice, fruits like apple and veggies. Cut and mash his food up if he seem to just swallow, so that his body can process it better.

If the problem persists, consult with his doctor. I wouldn't worry if he is not having a fever of any other signs or symptoms. You can call the doc just to see but I would hate for you to spend the money for them just to tell you to give him water and prune juice. If he is otherwise normal, I would try the prune juice remedy first. JThe light color could indicate certain medical issues but from what you described...the clumps and little balls. I would say that it's just constipation.

Just go with your gut feeling when in doubt. Mothers know when something is seriously wrong.

Good Luck

Unless your son cries or seems uncomfortable, this is probably nothing to worry about. If you have taken him to the doctor recently, is he in the normal range for height and weight? As long as he doesn't cry during bowel movements, plays, and eats normally, you have nothing to worry about. A babie's digestive system doesn't function fully until at least 2 years of age and eventually his stools will look more normal.

Enter:

"Dry Stool Symptom"
"Light Stool Symptom"

in Yahoo's search engine, seperately.

Several links are given to information.

I'm sure none of us could possibly know enough about your son & his condition better than you, so I sugggest you research those Web sites.

If I recall correctly, a light stool can indicate liver trouble.

Sounds constipated. Offer higher fiber foods and plenty of water. Also Metamucil offers a very paletable cookie to get some fiber into him fast.

He is probably constipated. Take him to the pediatrician and then the problem and reason for the problem can probably be fixed.
