I'm moving from Washington to California & I can fit everything in my suitcase pretty much, but I have a few extra things in a small box...Does it matter what kind of box? or any info on this would be great.

It should be sealed really well with packing tape. Make sure all the contents have padding; they'll toss it around quite a bit. Be sure to put your name and address on it.

Yes you can check a box the same way you check luggage. But they will probably open it for security. But will re close it as well.
Ive seen people with garbage bags for luggage. Its fine.
If you are that worried...Call the airline you plan to fly on and find out there policy.
