I think that only those who qualify for benefits should get them ie, disabled or carers. People who genuinly cant work. All those who just sponge of the state should be made to get a job and pay there own way.I may sound harse but so some people agree?

To paul jenkins.
for your information i have choose to work in a job that pays far less than i would get on state benefits. I feel a lot better knowing that the things i have i work damn hard for. I have raised 4 children on my own and they wont for nothing, the state has not paid for anything they have and im proud of that.

I totally agree that they should not get benefits. my husband worked till he was 70, paying taxes and generally giving to this country. [ he started working when he was 14] All my family work hard to pay their taxes, my nephews and nieces pay taxes, and they are now beginning to get really angry that they are paying for scroungers, both from this country and from the foreigners. I do have to say one more thing, my eldest son whilst working severed his foot. He was lucky and it was reatached. After several months he was back out there working. so all you lazy good for nothings are hopefully going to get your come uppance. When you go to America you don't get help, you have to show you can support yourself. They should have that here.

I disagree...but to an extent.

Everyone should have a right to some basic welfare.

In my own situation...After living in the states for 4 years without money, medical care or the such...LIFE is not easy.

I do believe though, that work for the dole programs should be extended and expanded so people give back to the community and do not just "take"

I completely agree with you. Not enough is being done to make people look for work. It was even in the news the other day; "jobseekers" are refusing to compete with Eastern European immigrants for jobs (because us Brits are too lazy) and so they remain unemployed for years. They were saying they're considering cutting benefits for the long term unemployed. I work damn hard, only to see 22% of my wages being given to people who can't be bothered to get a job. I've done cleaning work and I've done outdoor work in winter; you do what you've got to do to survive and at least I pay for myself, as little as I earn. But I can barely afford to do/wear the things a lot of these jobless people I see can, and it makes me sick to think that I paid for it!!

You are right and have answered your own question. Disability is not only of physical kind but also of mind that does not allow some to go out and work like everyone else. You paying your way is also notional and that is the reason you have state benefits so pettiness of mind does not come in the way of humanity

This is simple-minded Daily Mail type bullshit. There are very few people who claim benefit continuously for a long time. Most use benefit as a way back to work. This is necessary for a well planned society that does not mistreat the unfortunate.

A small number of people across the country are long term, unemployed. In most cases these are long term unemployable. Employers will avoid ex-prisoners, ex mental hospital patients, people with long term sickness problems, and most of all- people with no recent work record. Additionally, many people also live in places where the jobs are just not accesible.

On top of that the UK housing benefit system acts as a severe disincentive to any return to work- it means that in many cases people are actually better off unemployed than in work. Would you choose to work in a particular job if it resulted in a loss of a third of your family income?

The government has brought this up at a time when they are seeking right-wing reactionary support from ill educated people like you. I am sure that you fell for it hook, line and sinker.

I do agree that people are better off as people for having 'work' that gives meaning to life, but trying to starve them into it just won't work.

Of course, we could always reopen the workhouses- maybe that would satisfy you!

I agree, people who can work could be made to do voluntary work for their benefit, which would also give them some work experience, and provide jobs for those who organise the programmes

Personally i dont get benefits at all. If disabled people are so intent on being treated as equals then they should go out and get a job as well. And as for all the other spongers IF YOU CAN'T FEED 'EM - DON'T BREED 'EM! Young teenagers who have kids and can't support them should be steralised to stop them having anymore kids. And as for immigrants - get 'em down the mines lol.
