Good call.
God/Yahweh/The Great Spirit saves us, not religion.
However some people need the structure that religions provide. Some people prefer the rituals and guidelines set down by different faith systems.
To each their own.

As a whole, my relation with god is great. Although the easter bunny and I do get along better and I do go out for drinks more with the leprechauns on st. pattys day.

The term "religion" has changed its meaning ever since preachers appeared on TV, slamming "religion" in order to boost church attendance.

"Religion is any specific system of belief about deity, often involving rituals, a code of ethics, and a philosophy of life."

There is nothing derogatory about "religion" as it is used in the broadest sense of the term.

So its either successful brainwashing or our language is changing.
