Yes, and they can actually get skin infections from the matted fur also. If your dog has matts, you really need to take them to a groomer.

The mat actually causes the hair to pull the skin and yes it does irritate the skin and becomes painful. The hair can even get solid and hard. When mats are around the butt, the dog can be obstructed from going to the bathroom and can get infections EVEN FLIES LAYING EGGS in trapped fecal matter and festering sores under the mats and the dog can get maggots there. I know this because I used to be a dog groomer and I have seen the worst of matting.
Get the dog groomed. Early on, it is an annoyance but it just gets worse with time if you don't get the mats out.

Yes, they can form sores. Have you ever taken hold of your own hair and twisted it tight? It hurts, and matted hair on an animal can hurt as well. If they are really bad and lots of them, the best thing to do is take them to a groomer and have them clipped. However if there are only a few and you have someone to help hold the dog still, you can get them off yourself with a disposable safety razor. Just be careful not to cut the dog's skin. If you pull gently on the mat and gently scrape at the mat near the dog's skin, it will eventually come loose. It's tedious and you have to be gentle or it will hurt the dog. Give him a good treat when you're done, and have one yourself. It's hard work.

yes imagine your hair being pulled constantly. ouch. take your dog to a groomer tomorrow. have the dog shaved down, buy her a sweater if you need to, and let the hair grow back in and keep it combed daily. mats are painful for dogs, poor little thing.

Yes they can, not to mention the hair pulling on the skin can be extremely painful. Also little seeds and stuff can get stuck in the fur without you realising. They can then work their way under skin throughout the body and create painful and costly abcesses.

It will pull and hurt as if someone is pulling and twisting the hair. Take the animal to a groomer for proper removal and safe removal.
