Depends on the cat, and the lifestyle. Average life span is around 12 years, but if you're cat is a purely indoor cat this is lengthened. In Australia a lot of pet cats live over 20 years. By keeping your cat indoors, or in a suitable cat enclosure you will increase its life span by eliminating a lot of predators, including being hit by traffic.

Life expectancy in cats significantly varies between indoor only cats and outdoor cats. Indoor cats generally live from 12-18 years of age.
Cats allowed outdoors: 3.5 years
Cats kept only indoors: 17.5 years

I had a cat (Fido) who lived to 1 month short of 20 years. Not bad for an outdoor cat.
