I just recently discovered that a hospital had sent a bill to collections that I was not supposed to pay. Insurance covered it. It has been damaging my credit for 10 months now. I got the documentation from the hospital saying I have a zero balance and that insurance paid it, but when I dispute it will it just be marked paid and continue to hurt me for a few years, or will it be completely deleted from my file? This mistake has cost me over 200 points. I'd like to get them back seeing as this was not my fault.

If you weren't responsible for paying the bill, then it will NOT be simply marked paid.....it will be removed completely.

Doing this will likely almost immediately improve your score.

And since incorrect information was contained on your report, you can skip the waiting period for free credit reports (there are limits and timeframes on free ones to everybody....but you are now special).

You will be entitled to free reports from the credit reporting agencies to make certain the error is corrected.

It doesn't matter who's "billing mistake" it is, it can stay on your credit report for 7 years if the hospital or collection company (whomever reported it) doesn't authorize if to be removed. You can send a letter of dispute to the credit bureaus with your documentation and the creditor should out of good faith allow it to be removed once the credit bureaus inquire about the validity of the account. One thing you should know is that if they say that they can't remove it that is false. All credit bureau information is voluntarily sent to the bureaus and can be removed by whomever reported it.

It should be deleted. I see no reason it should stay on your record.

If you have any intention of seeking damages, you need to start sending out letters. Unless you can prove you were damaged by this item, you don't currently have a case. And failing to begin the dispute process will hurt any future case.

Send a dispute letter to both the creditor and the credit bureau and demand that the item be removed form your records.

If the mistake has been confirmed by the original biller, you should see it cleared from your report all together. Just check your credit report in 30-60 days to ensure it is off.

you should ask the hospital to send a letter of correction to the credit agency, insisting that it was the hospital's error.

they should be able to have it removed

I believe they take it off completely. I am currently waiting on a dispute of my own...so i'm HOPING they take it off!
