Brush him every day or two. Use a wire brush. I also heard you can use detangler spray to help if you get a mat. If it gets too matted just shear it all off and put a good sweater on him for a few weks until more hair grows back but keep brushing him!

To keep a poodle comfortable & looking like a poodle you need to get it professionally clipped at least every 6 weeks or learn how to do it yourself.......but poodles have hair, not fur & it grows quickly. In addition you need to be a responsible poodle owner & brush it out on a regular basis. Get a "slicker" brush & brush away from the growth. Don't allow mats to form. They pull on the skin & are painful to the dog. Brushing will be easy if you are keeping it clipped. Be a proud poodle owner.

Poodles are very high-maintenance dogs and need a lot of grooming. The best way I found to keep the hair from matting is keeping it very short by either learning how to groom the dog yourself or taking them to a groomer often. I always left hair around the mouth, top of the head and around the feet and clipped the rest of the body very short.

If you keep it short enough to where he's warm but not to curly, it really helps! We cut our pooch about once a month and it is manageable. Brushing helps too.
