I have Ares, a filesharing tool, which I use it to download music. However, whenever I download a movie, an avi, I can only get the sound to work. Why can't I see the actual video?

As others have said, you are missing the necessary codecs. Movies can be broken down into video and audio components. Both components come in a certain format. For example, mp3 is a format for audio files.

The easiest solution is to get VLC (http://www.videolan.org/ ) which is very versatile. I use it as a backup.

The better, but much more time intensive solution is to get the individual codecs yourself. I recommend you get FFDShow (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm ) and XviD (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Koepi_XviD.htm ) which covers many AVIs, and Media Player Classic (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm ) to actually play the movies.

You maybe missing a codec required to play Avi file. Install the latest Window Media Player will fix this since AVI is a microsoft codec. If it's still doesn't work go here http://www.k-litecodecpack.com/ and install the K-lite codec pack Basic. It has all the most often used codecs found on the Net.

Windows media player sometimes has issues in playing AVI files because of missing codecs. I recommend using VLC media player, it's working well for me. It usually takes a while to locate the correct codecs for the job so I suggest trying the media player i suggested. Good Luck!

I think some of the codec is missing in the avi file. Try to download and use divx codec from http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/.
