if i was to take off a face plate off of another cars receiver would it work? or how about with like a name brand for example Kenwood would the keenwood face plate work on another kenwood receiver?

99% of the time, no. Even among the same brand.

I'm bored at work so I'll answer this one... The face-plate will only work on the same exact receiver. If you need a faceplate then try Ebay, sometimes people sell the face alone. Also, higher end systems may have a password so even if you switched plates you couldn't use the stereo.
