It should be viceversa. Insurance companies can't report you. That would be illegal. Think about: if you are with Geico and you find a better deal with progressive and then Geico reports you to DMV saying you're uninsured, would you file a lawsuit against them? You bet you would, because they made false statements.

Actually they have been for some time. If you don't pay your insurance bill it gets reported, and they can then suspend your license to drive since state law requires insurance to drive. That why if you are getting rid of a car, cancel the insurance, never let it expire for non-payment.
Added: What if you switch companies? The new company will add you to the state maintained data base, the old company will remove you. It's based on your driver's license number and the VIN on the car.

They do it in nevada. Insurance companys in nevada are supposed to report you immediatley if you let your insurance lap. The dmv also pulls so many random drivers and checks their insurance. If you get caught then they give you a fine, or you have to prove if your car was broken down that a mechanic was working on it and they have to sign something for you or if you are selling the car then you do not have to pay for it. But if you ever go to register it or drive it again you have to pay off the fine before you can register the car and yes it is legal for them to do this.

The coverage firms will record at present to the DMV that your coverage has been canceled. In GA the coverage firms deliver an digital notification (style of like an e mail) to the dep. of revenues affirming your coverage lapsed or canceled. Then in case you pay to have it reinstated, the coverage company will deliver yet another digital word saying your automobile coverage have been reinstate.

Ummm, when you fail to pay your insurance, DMV is automatically notified by the insurance company.
This isn't anything new...

they are already doing this in other states...if you don't pay your insurance they notify the dmv and the dmv sends you a warning, if you don't listen then they will take your license and ultimately tow your car.
