There are very few true old style "handicap" races run today, at least in the U.S.

One of the few real handicaps is the Fall Highweight at Aqueduct traditionally run on Thanksgiving Day; Afrashad won it this year under 132 pounds. The favorite carried 134.

Cigar won the Massachusetts Handcap at Suffolk Downs in 1996 under 130.

Handicap races have fallen out of popularity in the U.S., trainers withdraw their horses if they don't like the weight assigments.

I'm not sure if I'm exactly following your question. Are you wondering the weight that horses must carry in some stakes races, like the Kentucky Derby for example. If I correctly recall, the jockeys weigh themselves, and then add the difference from a set figure in small weights that are placed in their saddles. I don't remember that figure for sure, but I think its 124 lbs. Phillies might be a little bit less, like 116 or something. I could probably find out for sure by spending a few minutes poking around the Net or checking past post positions. If no one else answers; I'll do that tomorrow. ;-)

UPDATE: I had just found some old post positions that I had printed from the DRF from the Kentucky Derby, and each of them say 126 lbs, and 121 for phillies.

In the old days a jockey had to weigh no more than 10 pounds more than the horse's assigned weight in a handicap race. This caused somewhat of a problem with horses that were assigned 101 pounds, etc.

In handicape race's horse are given a set weight depends if it's a filly or a colt,it dos'nt depend on the jockey,he has to make the weight to ride the horse, the weight could be 57kg's he has to ride that weight plus a kilo for the vest(Australia Wide).I know I'm still riding after 26 years..

What the weight of the jockey is,is immaterial. It's the horse who has to carry the allotted weight Generally in a highweight the top weight is set to carry 64kgs or 10stone
