No, there is a real purpose in regards to the wine itself.........there are lots of cheap wines with flat bottom on bottle.

The dimple is known as a 'punt'.

There are many believable explanations why wine bottles have punts, and it is a question that often comes up when wine is being discussed.

However - there is no single reason that everyone agrees on. You do get wine bottles without punts and there is a famous Champagne bottle that doesn't have a punt. So it is not essential.

However, punts are traditional. Champagne bottles are stacked in the winery with the neck of one tucked in the punt of another. Bottles with punts stand better upright on uneven surfaces, punts can be used for holding when pouring, they channel sediment around the base, give strength to the bottle and makes it look larger.

Choose which answer you like, but I think the real answer nowadays is 'because it is traditional'

it's called a "punt" and it's mostly so they can be stacked easily during the fermentation process. Also for champagne, it gives the bottle more structural integrety to withstand the internal pressure of the bubbles.

It's also a place to place your thumb when pouring champagne. The "proper" or traditional way to pour champagne is with one hand holding the bottom with your thumb in the punt.

It's called the punt and its purpose is to add structural integrity to the bottle.

I believe it's to do with the stresses on the bottle, and that this shape is the most stress free.

have no idea...but it is worth 2 points!

I would think it has something to do with the manufacture of the bottle! I have seen them without it!
