This is not really a religion It was originally started to make fun of people who believed in God.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Just because someone says they are a satanist doesn't mean they worship the devil (Yes, their choice of terms is confusing). Satanism, from my understanding, is typically along the lines of self worship and there are very few people who actually worship a literal Satan. You can read about the Church of Satan on their website (that's LaVey Satanism) http://www.churchofsatan.com/ I'm not remotely familar with other types..but what is described on that site (specifically their pdf pamplet material gets into the details) is what I was talking about where they don't actually worship a real satan. To them, the concept of satan is symbolic.

Satan is a counterfeit to God and everything he offers is counterfeit. Satan gives you his best in the beginning but his best starts to decline very rapidly until finally, he's taken you farther than you first planned to go and kept you there longer than you intended to stay...until many times a person can get so far out there that there is no recollection as to how to get back.

But when you have tasted of God, you quickly realize that He is very sweet. The benefits of serving Him get more intense and sweeter and better everyday. That's because He is genuine.

People who worship satan whether in the physical sense of worship or not (worship can be made by the daily life we live) lack a true encounter with The Lord of Lords! A true encounter with Him leaves you never wanting to look back because nobody knows like you know the things that The Lord has delivered you from in the grip of satan. PEACE!!!

I could never understand why someone would sign up for the losing team. I didn't know that Satanists do not worship Satan. Thanks for the great question; and to all who gave explanations.

I'm not sure that anyone actually worships Satan.

For one, to acknowledge Satan is to acknowledge God. It requires a Christian mindset to believe in Satan. And those who believe in Satan know that by the mythos of Christianity, God is more powerful and that those who follow Satan will suffer. So, what motivates a believer in God and Satan into worshiping Satan? Not much, really.

Now, some people *claim* to worship Satan. I've seen plenty of heavy metal enthusiasts who liked to draw pentagrams on their book bags and "pray" to Satan. Mostly, it was used to creep out their peers. And some people will blame Satan. A few serial killers found it convenient to pass the blame onto Satan in order to win sympathy for themselves.

Now, there are members of the Church of Satan, but they don't worship Satan. The name comes from the Hebrew word, which means "adversary." Rather than worshiping a deity, they view themselves as the adversary to the Christian church. They teach personal responsibility and not falling prey to emotional leeches. They don't turn the other cheek; they ensure that their enemies know not to mess with them.

Satanism is a way of life, not a religion, and not the worship of Satan.

The worship of Satan is something completely different.

Some people worship satan because they have compromised their souls -- maybe they made a deal with the devil. Or others probably are just tired of hearing about God and being rebellious, decide to worship the opposite. How sad........

Sorry, not a satanist but am so baffled by the concept that I have to comment.
I've heard that some have a problem with being given bodies that are made to pro-create. Man was not ment to be monogamous the moral guidelines were set---and then man was instructed not to act on his physical nature.

The only reason anyone has claimed to worship Satan has been to bother and/or shock others. There is no historical basis for Satanism.
