I took as little as possible.

Socks, because hospitals are cold and birthing babies is a bloody, messy business.

A toiletries bag, because taking a shower and brushing your teeth goes a long way toward making you feel presentable.

A list of phone numbers and a digital camera.

A magazine, because there's a lot of waiting around.

I went home in the same clothes I arrived at the hospital wearing. But I did bring a nursing bra or two.

Some women need nursing pads, and you won't know whether you do or not until you're there. You might bring some, just in case.

A car seat, and an outfit to bring your baby home in. Probably a blanket to cover him/her up with, too, although you should take all the ones in your hospital bassinet: you've paid for them, and they're GREAT for swaddling.

And that's about it. I wore a hospital gown or a hospital robe while I was there--again, birth is a messy business, and why make laundry for myself? I used the crazy mesh hospital panties and the giant hospital pads.

And you spend all your time either on the phone, watching bad TV, gazing adoringly at your new baby, or sleeping (when you can).

You don't need much. :)

That is so sweet:
As a Mom twice over, this would be a great hospital bag for me:

A pretty new Robe w/ new slippers, socks, and new pajamas for the stay. If she is planning to breastfeed, make sure the pajama is a pajama for nursing mothers w/slots. Also, nursing pads.

A nice outfit to go home in--it would be my favorite maternity slip on/off easy dress. Some slip on shoes.

My hairbrush, favorite shampoo, favorite soap, pretty new washcloth, new shaver, toothpaste, toothbrush, lotion and sanitary pads. Some pony tail holders for my hair or a pretty headband. My blush and lip gloss.

One or two magazines, a parenting magazine and a regular magazine like McCall's. Some gum or mints.

Babie's first photo outfit. Usually just a simple sleeper in a favorite color--blue for boy, pink for girl. Babie's going home outfit and a blanket for baby. Babie's first toy.

A mom/child gift would be really sweet. There are some really pretty necklaces with a mom and baby on them.

Congratulations on your baby and I wish you the best!! :)

BTW, I hope you and your wife enjoy the quiet until February, after all, babies only know two languages: Cry and Cry Louder. Of course, you'll quickly forget that when you look at them and see the little angel wings coming out of their backs and the little halo shining over their heads.

Slippers, shampoo and conditioner, body wash and sponge, snacks, gameboy and games (my husband would play it while the baby and I slept), magazines and puzzle books, calling card, deoderant, nightgowns, underwear, nursing bra and pads, hair band, lip balm, moisturizer, mouthwash, mints, warm socks, brush and comb, watch with a second hand, something to focus on during contractions (I used my favorite wedding picture) but can also be a favourite stuffed animal or something like that, favourite music, camera and camcorder and basically whatever else you can think of that your wife may like that'll make her feel more comfortable. We didn't need to pack anything for the hospital for the baby, such as sleepers, and diapers because the hospital provided it all. You just have to have your own outfit for the baby to come home in, and carseat and blankets.

Bring a full understanding of what her rights as a patient and a mother are. I have seen too many hospitals treat birth like a medical condition, and it is not. If it were, then every animal birthing would be doing so under doctors care in hospitals around the world!

Make sure that her wishes are voiced, and unless there is a serious medical reason for her not to, she should have the baby at home.
In the USA, even with all the medical technology we have, it is not safer to give birth in a hospital.

A nightgown, if she is breastfeeding a maternity bra and some of those pads to put in the bra, and something to do when she isn't watching tv or taking care of the baby or talking on the phone or talking with visitors.

Slippers, a nightgown, a robe, nursing bra and pads, warm socks, comfortable outfit to wear home (NOT pre-pregnancy, more like 7th month clothing), sanitary pads and toiletries. Oh yes, and definitely underwear as was stated by others. I forgot about that one! :)

If you want to be extra nice, include one of those little back massager things you can hold in your hand and rub on her back. It has 4 little round "feet" that feel awesome on your back.
