Muslims take the stories from the OT and change some of them a little bit and change others a whole lot. They believe that the Jews changed the Bible and therefore it is not accurate to what they believe.
For example the story of who Abraham took up to the mountain--Isaac or Ishmael--Christians and Jews have it written in their holy texts that Isaac was the son that Abraham took up to the mountain--Muslims on the other hand--to make the point that Ishmael was really the child of promise--claim that Abraham took Ishmael up to the mountain.
Most of the OT is disregarded by Muslims.

Muhammed spent his entire childhood listening to Jews and Christians who met at Mecca. He eventually knew or had heard everything that was in the Old testament from the Jews. He learned the New Testament from the Christians.

So he incorportated these old and new testaments into his philosophy.

Mecca was an Oasis in Saudi Arabia (500 AD)

Most of the area were polytheistic before Mohammed started his empire.

Mecca actually charged money to worship and pray to about 20 different idols and statues in Mecca.

The merchants of these idols kicked Mohammed out of Mecca. The Mohammed became bitter and started teaching revenge and the murder of anyone who did not follow him.

How do most muslims have some belief that is similar from Old testament?

GOod question, thats the point, the Same GOD who sent these scriptures on Moses, Jesus CHrist (Peace BE Upon Them) sent HIS final and perfected, un-adulterated message on Muhammed to affirm what was sent before him.

But due to the passage of time, these holy books have been corrupted by materialistc men and the church. Therefore we now have much in-scientific claims in them.

Unlike the QUran which is the same since 1430 years. And has scientific miracles.

Muslims refer to Christians and Jews as "People of the Book" because we all revere the Old Testament (the Law and the Prophets) as the Word of God to humanity.

Actually, from what I understand Muhammed denied just about everything from Judaism and Christianity except for a few names and a few incorrect lineages when he was inventing islam. He had to reject the Holy Books of both faiths in an attempt to give the koran validity (nice try).

Muslims don't believe in the Old testament neither the New Testament.
They just take some verses of prophecy from them and twist to claim that it was about their prophet. and proclaim that the Holy Bible has been twisted by Jews and Christians to hide the prophecies about the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
The Quran was raveled to Muhammad by a transformed angel of light.

2 Corinthians, chapter 11

13: For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

14: And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

15: Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

2 Corinthians, chapter 4

3: But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

4: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

All about the false hood of Islam was written by the Apostles of Jesus Christ by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, which was promised by Jesus Christ before his Crucifixion, even before 600 years to Muhammad.

Muslims are claiming this as the gospel of Paul, though we have only one Gospel, which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Most ancient Muslims were Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians before they converted to Islam.

As for Muhammed, I don't know what he was before the angel Gabriel visited him, but I do know that he practiced the ancient holy Arab traditions.

They say they believe in the Old Testament, but it is a very twisted one at best.
