Do yo live in an apartment or condo? If so, you could be hearing neighbors. If you live in a house, you can hear your neighbors sometimes if there are alley's or just the right acoustics to echo the sound toward you. If none of these could be possible, consider whether you are really awake, or are in a shallow sleep and are having a "lucid" dream. If none of these things are at all possible, tell your parents or significant other, (if you're under 18), or go to a clinic or ER for emergency psychiatric treatment. Hearing voices couled be caused by the hallucinations of Schizophrenia, and will usually start to occur with the beginning of puberty. This is a treatable illness!

Other causes of hearing voices, or hallucinations:

Drug Toxicity, legal or illegal
Sleep Deprivation
Practical Jokers
(Such as a tape recorder, or some other way to funnel noises to where you are sleeping. Do you have brothers or sisters, or know anybody that likes to play tricks on people?))

First, houses are prone to make a lot of different noises (especially at night when everything else is quiet) because they "settle" and that is quite natural. Concerning the voices, do you happen to watch scary things on TV before going to bed? The mind can become overactive, and with it being such a powerful thing, you can actually convince yourself of just about anything. Also, could anyone in the house be playing tricks on you? Do you ever hear these things in the daytime? How about when you are there all alone? A lot more details are still needed to help you figure things out. Don't panic--the more you convince yourself that you hear things, the more you will hear.

Proper differential diagnosis between the types of dementia (see below) will require, at the least, referral to a specialist, e.g. a geriatric internist, geriatric psychiatrist, neurologist, neuropsychologist or geropsychologist. However, there are some brief (5-15 minutes) tests that have good reliability and can be used in the office or other setting to evaluate cognitive status. Examples of such tests include the abbreviated mental test score (AMTS) and the mini mental state examination (MMSE).

An AMTS score of less than six and an MMSE score under 24 suggests a need for further evaluation. Of course, this must be interpreted in the context of the person's educational and other background, and particular circumstances. Routine blood tests are usually performed to rule out treatable causes. These tests include vitamin B12, folic acid, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), C-reactive protein, full blood count, electrolytes, calcium, renal function and liver enzymes. Abnormalities may suggest vitamin deficiency, infection or other problems that commonly cause confusion or disorientation in the elderly. Chronic use of substances such as alcohol can also predispose the patient to cognitive changes suggestive of dementia.

A CT scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI scan) is commonly performed. This may suggest normal pressure hydrocephalus, a potentially reversible cause of dementia, and can yield information relevant to other types of dementia, such as infarction (stroke) that would point at a vascular type of dementia. Sometimes neuropsychological testing is helpful as well.

The final diagnosis of dementia is made on the basis of the clinical picture. For research purposes, the diagnosis depends on both a clinical diagnosis and a pathological diagnosis (ie, based on the examination of brain tissue, usually from autopsy).

Well, there's always the option of ghosts, if you believe in them. I personally don't. But my house often makes strange sounds at night as well. I've noticed that the more I think about them and try to figure out what they are, the more they sound like voices or other familiar sounds. It could be just your imagination. Still, if you're really worried about it, I would suggest speaking to a doctor. It's always possible that it's schizophrenia, after all. However, it seems more likely to me that you're just overthinking the sounds that the house makes on its own.

You need some rest, your hearing things. Go to the drug store and buy some sleep aid, put some mood music on, like a rain storm or birds. Get some sleep!

I'd say it's not normal, but for a temporary fix, try to put a fan on at night for some white noise. Good Luck.
