All the responders are correct. You don't have to spend a fortune for good A/V & A/S programs. There are good freebies available for download. For anti-virus I use AVG:

& for anti-spyware I use several:
Windows Defender
AdAware
and Spybot-Search & Destroy
for a more complete treatment of the subject, you can go to Kim Komando's website and check out the Security sections under the "Downloads" and "Tips" tabs. If you are not already familiar with firewalls & the HOSTS file (see
you may find these useful.

They are both two different things. You definitely need both if you want to keep your computer running smoothly! Also, avoid free anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. Good PC protection is just one of those things where you need to spend the money! I use the Zone Alarm Security Suite and I love it!

You need both! Anti Virus is to protect files on your systems getting corrupt. Anti Spyware protects you from sites and software that can be loaded on your system while you are browsing the net and capture your activity on the net. Apart from this you need a firewall too to protect your system from being hacked into while connected on the net.

Both are! But you can get many free spyware programs such as spybot. In your case, Anti-Virus would be the best.
