Since cortisone is prescribed as an anti-inflammatory drug why are doctors hesitant to provide this drug over a long duration?

It is because it can cause cushings' syndrome.

Cortisone injections are given in a series and do not always work for everyone. But it is definately worth a try because some people get the first shot of the series and never feel pain again. It all depends. And if the D.P.M. is going to give you an injection in the foot, they usually numb it first with a cold substance called ethyl chloride so you won't feel anything.

Look up its side effects. Increases blood sugar (not good if diabetic), can cause cushingoid appearance over the long term. Can suppress adrenal function. There are many, many more. Look it up.
