The AF...parajumpers (an excellent special forces operation that is highly overlooked), the Army is Delta Force (not Rangers, they are what are referred to as SOC...we'll get to that later) the Navy is obviously the most popular to civilians the SeALs. In the USMC you'll find a several different types of units out there. The Marine Corps has the Expeditionary Units or MEU or MEF the F stands for Force. These are what is referred to as SOC or Special Operations Capable. These are small units that can perform many of the operations of special force units such as HRT (hostage rescue), CQB (close quarter battles), Recon...etc. The USMC also has Force Recon (of which I am a memeber). Force Recon are specially trained units that only perform Special Operations within the USMC but do not fall under SOCOMM....(Special Operations Command). They work directly for the USMC and therefore usually perform Recon/HRT/CQB/Demolitions when ordered to do so by the Corps. The USMC just started (three years ago) a Special Operations unit at Camp Pendalton, CA that falls under SOCOMM...This unit is made up of 86 Marines and it is a little known unit.
In my personal opinion I would take any US Special Forces unit over anybody else...yes they all have their good spots but the United States has the best fighting men in the world.

Super trooper: the Old Guard Rocks! Dad still talks about his time with them
As for Marines Force Recon, my uncle retired from them after 36 years of hard fought service and with an impressive sniper record in Nam (33 confirmed). And they kick serious butt.
However all my personal things side. The French Foreign Legion is perhaps the best (jeez I can't believe I am using French and best in the same sentence). A few years back there was a endurance and obstacle test held for various military forces. The course was completed By the french Foreign legion in 45 minutes, the marines were in second with a distant 3 hours.
SAS is also on my list.
Actualy I dont really think it is a fair question. Each Force has its own unique role and abilities.
Persoanly my hat goes off to all of them, even if I personaly have particular bias for the US Army.

Well the SAS and the SBS are the most experienced yet they are horribly underfunded...
Navy SEAL has the hardest training, so does Delta Force.. But it's like comparing apples and oranges for some, I mean they are good at what they do..
There are Special Forces we haven't even heard about such as the German Kommandos and the CIA Black Ops and such.. There are much more secret things going on in this world that we haven't even dreamed of...
And although Rangers are elite, they aren't special operations capable.. They don't do hostage-resue or counter-terrorism.. But they are an elite light airborne infantry. But Army Special Forces and Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta (Delta Force) are Special Ops. material..

In my opinion I think the Navy Seals are the best Special Operations force and they are the best because they are trained in every situation whether it be land, air or water. I've talked to ex-recon that are now Seals and they say that the Seals training was more intense.

Para rescuers, Navy Seals, Army Rangers Come on guys I aint about to try to make anyof em mad at me. They are all trained to kill. They are all flesh and they all are mortal. The baddest of the bad are the men that call the shots that kill thousands at a time. The men that dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the JIm Jones's that have their followers commit mass suicide. A soldier is an instrument of destruction me? I fear the conductor.

They are all extremely competent at what they do.
The key is to match the right forces to the particular mission.
As far as training goes, I would think that the SeALs have the most extreme when you factor in the cold water.

I don't know your definition of "ELITE" but for my money I want ROK (south korea) ARMY RANGERS watchin my back .These guys are KILLERS like you can't imagine (questioning captives wrapped in razor wire then shoting them cause its TOO MUCH TROUBLE to cut them out). You see that stuff about high tech weapons and cool gadgets -these guys kill with garrots and bare hands like its getting a coke or something from the fridge. I have been attached to a couple of special ops units for short periods but never felt as safe as with these guys cause they KNEW if you get hurt it is gonna be their BUTT !
