Why do we call the ICs as 74 series, why not by some other names?

The popular TTL series or 74 series and 54 series, What does 74 and 54 stand for

74 indicates a standard comercial grade temperature range

54 indicates a military grade temperature range

Those were old standard numberings for the ICs. The ICs all start with the numbers 74 or 54. You could call them classic numbers nowadays, but they are so widely used you can use the older numbers to define a group of products and find current ICs using the older numbers as a compatability matcher.
