I figure that I probably have something not hooked up right. But sometimes sounds which should be background noise drowned out the dialogue in the movie.

Typically, voices come through the center channel. There are a few ways to solve this problem:

1) Turn your center channel volume up.
2) Adjust surround sound modes.
3) Shorten the audio cable for center channel.
4) You can adjust the volume on your surround channels.

Sounds like your speakers are not equalized for sound, meaning that they all should be playing at the same level, one should not be louder than the others.
In the receiver there should be some kind of audio set up for your speakers so that you can adjust the sound level for each speaker, this test should be done with a sound level meter to achieve the best sound levels for best results. If you can do this , everything should be fine.

It might be time to get a center channel speaker. If you already have one you should try different surround sound modes on your receiver.

The center channel volume as the others have said. Buy a calibration CD, some cleaner Cd's have it on them also. The CD allows you to test the volume of each channel.

as the other posters have already said-the centre speaker covers dialogue and this is probably turned down-go into your amps speaker set-up menu select "centre" or "c" and turn it up. but do not forget to adjust the other speakers to suit.
