We have a relatively new VCR. Today it chewed a tape then when I tried another it played for about 3 seconds then stopped itself. It's doing this with all my tapes. Why is it switching the play mode off? Is it something my husband can fix easily or is it a techie call out?

Your machine is very dirty.
Once a tape has been eaten, there are now oxides from the tape on the heads and tape path along with whatever goo that was there to make it eat the tape in the first place.
You can run a cleaning tape through there, but it may eat that also.
You need to have the unit professionally cleaned. Most shops charge a flat rate for this.

Recommend you buy a DVD player. Vcr tapes could just be old and dirty. We had the same problem. Time to upgrade!

I'm sure taking it back to the store has already crossed your mind. The VCR is toast. Get a DVD player instead. I recently bought a Coby DVD player from cognigen http://www.nextdaypc.com/main/products/details.aspx?PID=3047525
