I don't think it causes it, if you are taking these meds you may already have some problems like that. Look at the side effects to be sure.

I don't think it can CAUSE agoraphobia, but, Valium can make you lethargic, which in turn, can cause you to not want to go out. If you take too many, all you'd want to do is lay around and do nothing. It isn't the best drug for someone wanting to be energetic. I would talk to the prescribing Dr. and explain how you feel. Maybe an anti-depressant is more along the lines of what you need, to help you get a move on. PS: I admire the fact you gave up the booze. Bully for you!

Valium does not cause agoraphobia, it may even be prescribed to sufferers of agoraphobia. If you have been on valium for 10 years, then its time you took control and told your doctor to help you off the drugs and then have other forms of therapy that will reduce you need for the drugs. DO NOT STOP TAKING THE DRUGS see your doctor, and if you are not satisfied with his/her answers, then see another doctor immediately. Valium is a highly addicitive drug and is classified under the dangerous drugs act as a class A drug.
If you are begining to feel agoraphobic then the drugs are clearly failing to help you resove personal issues, and hence you need additional help and support. If you suffer with anxiety, see a hypnotherapist - with the right therapist you can quickly overcome your worst anxieties and build a greater sense of self-confidence.
Good luck

I presume you mean "agoraphobia" -- the fear of leaving home (or another safe place) and being out in open spaces or a public place.
Valium is a benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety, and indeed, is often prescribed to *treat* agoraphobia. However, that said, as with all benzodiazepines there is a chance of a patient having a "paradoxical reaction" -- that is, there is a chance the drug will do exactly the opposite of what it is intended to do. This is fairly rare, but it does happen.

no, it shouldn't. It should ease anxiety. Please talk to the doctor who prescribed the valium. You may need a different med.
