How come Jesus, a Jew, was crucified on Friday afternoon?

Question

Jews were not executed on the Sabbath (Friday evening into Saturday). That means Jesus would have had to die that afternoon.

How did Jesus die in one afternoon when crucifixions normally take several days to be completed?

Jesus was crucified on 14 Nisan -- whether that was a Thursday (as some say) or Friday (as tradition says), you decide.

At the 3rd hour (9:00 AM) Yeshua was nailed to the execution tree (at the same time the Temple lamb was tied to the altar).

At the 9th hour (3:00 PM) Yeshua said "It is finished" and He died (in the Temple the High Priest killed the Temple lamb and said' "It is finished".

Messiah Yeshua was buried before the sun set.


The Romans were the crucifiers. But with the next day being a Jewish Holy Day, they did hasten the deaths so the dead would not be on the tree/cross during the Sabbath. That is why they broke the legs of the two malefactors; but when they came to Jesus they say He was already dead ([it was after 3 pm] so, instead, they ran the spear into His side.

That is HOW Jesus died in one afternoon ... hung on the Cross from 9 am to 3 pm; accomplished the Atonement, gave the Victor's Shout of Triumph "It Is Finished", then bowed His head and dismissed His spirit.

On the Third Day He rose from the Dead, even as He had foretold. For 40 Days He remained among His disciples, teaching them and even appearing to more than 500 believers at one time. Providing conclusive proof that though He had been dead, yet He was now alive, forevermore alive.

My own believes are that Jesus started dieing when he was betrayed. He was beaten to the point that a normal man would have died from shock. Flogging is done with a "cat-of 9-tail". This is a handle with 9 leather straps on it. At the end of the strap are pieces of broken glass and pieces of metal. Jesus was to be hit with this thing 40 or49 times. This would rip the flesh from the bone,and brake bone too. After this he was made to carry his cross. Sabbath for the Jews starts at sun-down on Friday to sun-down on Saturday. This is way Mary and his followers made hast to per the body before sun-down. The reason Jesus died so fast was,because the Romans knew that the Jews needed to get the body down. The others had their legs broken. But in Jesus case they thought he had to be dead(for what they had put him through) and hit his lung with a spear.

No where in any Bible does it ever say that Jesus was cruxified on a Friday. This is a cruel deception of Satan. Jesus was cruxified on a Wednesday - Thursday, Friday and Saturday he laid in his tomb. (A day consist of evening till evening for the Hebrews. Jesus died at three pm Wednesday afternoon, was taken off the stake and burried for three whole days, not 1 1/2 or 2, but three full days and three full nights.) On Sunday before day break he had already risen before the two Mary's got to the cave. Question: If Jesus suffered his three trials, his beatings and his cruxifiction on Friday, then how could he say that the proof that he was the Messiah was that he would be in the ground for three days and three whole nights - as Jonah had been in the belly of the big fish if he was cruxified on a Friday and raise before Sunday morning???

". . . but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah." Then Jesus left them and went away." Matt 16:4

". . . He would be killed, and he would be raised on the third day." Matt 16:21

Actually He was killed at about mid-day. There's a passage about the sky going dark right as He gave up the ghost and it specifically states that it was at mid-day.

There's also a passage about breaking the legs of the condemned. The act of being hung puts pressure on the diaphragm making it difficult to breath. The condemned would have to push against the cross with their feet to stretch out and breath. Those hung on a cross could survive for days until they died of dehydration and starvation. The soldiers broke the legs of the condemned so they couldn't stretch out and would suffocate. However, Jesus had lost so much blood that He died before they broke the prisoners legs.

Because of the Sabbath the soldiers went to break their legs so they would die sooner because then they wouldn't be able to push up on the cross and get a breath. But when they got to Jesus he was already dead and to be sure he was dead,the soldier thrusted a sword into Jesus' side, and they knew he was already dead because of the way the blood and water came out seperated. So Jesus died sooner than they normally died. It may have died quicker because of the massive amount of blood he lost when they beat him beforehand.So he would have been weak. And spiritually it would have been much more traumatic for him.

well he did die in the afternoon, it says the sky darkened. And as to not leave a body up on sabbath they always went and broke the knee caps.To see if Jesus had died already, they pierced Him with a spear, and left all His bones unbroken. WOW just according to the prophecy. It is amazing when God says something, it really happens.

Keep in mind that Jesus had already suffered allot before He was crucified. That in its self is significant. The bible also says He gave up His spirit. He had to have been dead on Friday or He would not have risen on the first day of the week Sunday.

He was speared through the chest. That may have helped. Not to mention the hours of beating and torture before hand.

If you will recall, the two thieves on either side of him had their legs smashed and broken in order to speed up their dying, also for the sake of the coming sabbath.

Well Jesus did die before the Sabbath, his death took only a couple hours v.s the several days like you mentioned, His Spirit rested on the Sabbath, and He died so quickly because He was God so He had to yield up His spirit in order to die, technically He should have died the night before as He was sweating blood! but because He wanted to die for your and my sins He waited till the cross.
