If your hair is naturally curly and untreated with chemicals, the first thing to do, before considering chemicals is to get it back into good shape. If you do have chemicals in it already, you still need to get it back into good shape before you reapply anything (including color)!

I normally don't say this, but I strongly recommed a few brands I've had personal experience with, due to the extensive moisturizing properties and natural non-toxic ingredients. Once the moisture balance is back, you should have less problems keeping it straight. By the way, if you have health insurance you may want to get a thyroid test, as that could also be a problem contributing to the dryness. (hypothyroidism)...

1. Treasured Locks- shea butter shampoo and shea butter leave in conditioner. http://www.treasuredlocks.com/
Your hair will drink this stuff up. Also nice is their brand, hair and scalp elixer.
2. Hairobics - entire program, particulalry leave in conditioner, pomade, and hair and scalp booster. This website is exceptionally detailed and great. I can't say bad things about the products. They are a godsend in the age of petroleum and mineral oils, these blessed people use vegetable oils and vegetable petroleum! http://hairobicsallnatural.net/hair_talk.html\
3. Arbonne - shampoo/conditioner are great very moisturizing products. Expensive but last a while. Check ebay for better pricing.

The key here is to use natural products, as the regular stuff may be drying you out with alcohols, etc..
Additionally, depending on your climate, if its really cold out, adding a hot oil treatment, and wrapping you head in warm moist towels can really help. (you will need very thick gloves to do this... get hand towels - 3 - and a pot of water, and add some herbs to it. boil, throw towels in, and wring out with gloves on. Cool slightly, and place on oiled hair. Sit for 20 minutes like that, and heat up towels if they cool off or use a giant heating pad to keep warm...

Another wonderful treatment is apple cider vinegar as the finishing rinse or if you can't deal with the smell, make a strong tea with sage and/or nettles, and use that as a hair rinse. Leave in 1-2 minutes and rinse. Then dry hair off. By the way, it will cut the oilyness of the hot oil treatment by using these acidifying rinses to restore the natural acid balance to the hair follicule and scalp.

Once your hair is normal condition (by the way protein is going to dry you out as well, so avoid that for a while- you will get more strength through moisture...), then you can evaluate your desire to have straight hair. It's going to take alot of care - intensive care to maintain curly hair straight.

I need intensive care to maintain a moist condition up in the frigid northeast. By the way, if you have a party coming up, take good care of your hair and find a hair dresser that can assist.
Brazillian and Dominican hair dressers are great, as they can really roller brush your hair strait. If you moisurize 2-3x per week before your high heat hair blowdrying, your hair will be fine.

As it says on the Hairobics site, any thing you take care of will grow and prosper!

Best of luck!

Trim the most damaged ends. Go to a local salon a get a product called joico hair restorer. Use this product at least two times per week only for five minutes at a time...no longer....it is expensive about 25 dollars for a small tube(12-18oz) but lasts a long time. Then get your ends trimmed regularly to avoid any further damage of hair splitting further up the hair shaft. Use a good shampoo and conditioner. Even Pantene in wal-mart is good buy. Now use anti frizz products on your type of hair it is recommended to use a silicone gel only near the middle and ends. You may use a light mousse at the root but never apply to scalp. If you want to straighten your locks after they are improving get a CHI straightening iron..only a CHI causes the least amount of damage and is worth the 130 dollar investment. Good products that don't damage your hair may cost more upfront but to repair your hair is much more expensive...and it may fall out. You may consider using snap in hair extensions for your party as they do no damage and look great.

The best product I have found to straighten the hair and make it healthy at the same time is Paul Brown Products. Find a salon that gives Paul Brown straightening perms and make sure you also purchase the Paul Brown Oil for your hair also but, don't use over a nime size or your hair will look oily instead of shinny and healthy. It can be expensive to have done but it is worth it. Have it done though when you have nothing special plans for probably 72 hours because you can not wash or get your hair wet within that time after having it done or the results will reverse on you. Your hair will be really straight, soft, healthy and shinning in the end. I love it.

For the next three month don't do anything to your hair that is damaging. Just do tons of deep masks and when you do them cover them with a shower cap and leave it as long as possible. I would also recommend going to a cheap salon like fantastic Sam's or cuts by us and tell them you want a deep conditioning treatment. They will put you under a dryer with a cap and a really good deep conditioner. Do this as often as you can. There is also a product made by nexus called emergen-c. it is in a small bottle and is excellent for rebuilding your hair. they sell it in most walmarts now. Just keep the heat off it and when the party comes you can flatten all you want and it will be healthy and shiny.

I straighten my hair alot and the only thing that helps when it gets to that point when it seems it wont straighten anymore I get it trimmed. That will make it look 100% better. You should just get like 1/2 or even a 1/4 inch cut and it will make a big difference. Also try biosilk shine spray or the serum that will make your hair really soft and shiny.

Use a moisturizing shampoo & conditioner. once you step out of the bathe, use a straightening balm & blow dry hair directly. Then use a straightening cream/spray & flat iron it directly [:
