GT = Grand Turismo (Grand Touring)

RS and SS are GM terms:

RS = Rally Sport
SS = Super Sport

In a modern capacity the GT has an upgraded engine (V8), body work, suspension parts, brakes, and a few other extras over the V6 models. (In the past Ford used to make LX 5.0s which were essentially GTs that looked like LXs).

The SS was GM's top of the line model, the RS was usually a step down, but a step up from the base. GM changed around these models so much its hard to say what the true differences are, but the SS was always the cream of the crop.

Also, GT does not stand for GTO. They are two different things.
The GTO was a vehicle made by Pontiac (in two different generations.) The name GTO means Grand Turismo Omologato, which essentially means a Grand Touring vehicle that has been homologated (enough have been made available to the general public that it can legally be raced in competition.) Years ago, when racing was cool, people could actually buy the cars that they saw drag racing or running on NASCAR tracks. In fact, in order to enter a car into a race it had to be made available to the general public (not in racecar form but in a slightly watered down version.)

Can you imagine driving a NASCAR racecar to the grocery store?

Dodge RT is not faster, it is a 14 second car, it runs like 14.2. The mustang runs 13.5. Remember, the charger weighs over 4000lbs. The dodge charger SRT-8 runs a 13.5 and is neck and neck with the stang but the RT is deffinately slower. I have seen them race literally fifty or so times at the track. It depends on what you are looking for and which dodge charger you are talking about. If you are not talking about the srt8 or at least the RT, then mustang all the way. For my taste, unless you are talking about the srt8 then its still mustang all the way. If you are looking for something with a lot more room, 4 doors, rear seats that will be comfortable for anyone to sit in, and a little more class and a little older more distinguished look, then I say go with the dodge charger. If you want a 2 door muscle car that will give you better performance, looks more like a sports car, and has more of a younger and wilder look to it then go for the mustang. You can not loose either way, both cars are awesome. If the cars for you, and you dont have to fit a wife and 2 kids in it every time you go out, then go with the stang, I mean come on, its a mustang gt. The current body style looks awesome. If you need to be more family orientated, but still want something that will get up and go when you mash the pedal, then get the charger.

The GT model designation actually predates cars themselves. Among the aristocracy it was long believed that a Grand Tour was an essential part of a young gentleman's formal education. Luggage and carriages specially used for this were given the designation GT for Grand Touring.

Eventually it became a class of racing known as Gran Turismo and cars that are racing models often get the GT designation.

If I was to chose between the 2008 mustang and the 2008 Dodge Charger I would pick the Mustang. If I had to chose between the 2008 mustang and A 2011 Dodge Charger. I would pick the charger. I like the Chargers a lot but not a big fan of the 2006-2010 models. If I were to pick between the 2011 mustang and the 2011 charger I would pick the Charger.
