It sounds like you need to ask your doctor to do a urine culture. There are hundreds of kinds of bacteria that can cause UTI's, and they are not all sensitive to the same antibiotics. Doctors generally just prescribe antibiotics which are generally effective against the most common types of UTI's, but your's may be something different. With a urine culture, your urine will be sent to the lab where a technician will determine the specific kind of bacteria that is causing your infection. Then, they will expose it to several different kinds of antibiotics and determine which one will be the most effective against it. The whole process takes about 3 days and it is the most surefire way to make sure that the medicine you are taking will kill the bacteria and clear up your infection.

If the antibiotic you are taking is not killing the bacteria that is causing your infection, it can last indefinitely ... and only get worse. The infection can spread to your kidneys, and even into your bloodstream.

If this second antibiotic doesn't make you feel any better within 48 hours of beginning it, definitely talk to your doctor about getting a urine culture. Hope you feel better soon!

If the antibiotics work, you should be better in 24-48 hours. Are you male or female? Could you also have a pelvic infection. If you are not better you need to be re-seen, have a 2nd urine checked and sent for culture in case you have a resistant organism.
