My cats are also inside only,( by the way I don't believe this is animal abuse as stated in another answer. I used to work at an animal sanctuary and learned a lot there, such as the average life span of a outdoor cat is only about 9 years indoor cats have a average life span of a bout 17 or older. Of course peoples opinions vary I have no right to judge. and I'm digressing and not answering your question).
I read the other answers and I agree that yes they can get it from your carpet, clothing and things such as that. Be careful around other peoples cats or strays, because if they have them you can bring them home to your kitty,( as well as other illnesses.). Not to say that you can't pet other cats, just be sure to wash your hands and such before touching your own cat.
If you have more than one cat you need to be sure that you take care of both of their ear mites at the same time, because they can transfer it back and forth. If it is only one cat getting them you may consider keeping that cat separate from the others for a while until his ear mites are gone.

There is also a chance that your cat doesn't even have ear mites. Some cats just have chronically dirty ears. Siamese cats are prone to this. My mother has a cat that is part Siamese and his ears have to be cleaned lot. It does almost look like ear mites, but it isn't. If you talk to your vet you can get a special cleaner for this type of problem, but I have found that warm water and a q-tip works just fine as long as you keep up on the cleaning, and don't let it build up.
Hope this is helpful to you. Good luck!

If your kitties are having ear problems, consider that it may not be mites. Mine has never had mites, but her ears itch all the time from a chronic yeast condition. I have to do all kinds of stuff to try to keep it at bay. Have them checked to be sure it's really mites.

It might just be bacteria in their ears my Cats had it and the vet gave me some stuff to put in their ears and it worked but if your vet said it was ear mites then if one of your cats came from the woods or outside they might of had it and gave it to the other cats.

Germs, viruses, micro-organisms are introduced into our home through our own shoes, clothes, hair, hands... etc.
