You should check rescue sites. The web can help you locate rescue animals and if you have no success there try local ASPCA in your area for more detailed contacts. All over the world animals are being destroyed because people don't want them or the novelty wore off. Some don't consider the expense of owning such wonderful creatures. Go to Barrel racehorse rescue or try a play on those words until you find a hit. You may have the opportunity to adopt without a large fee. Shots and Feed cost or transportation may be your only expenses

I would recommend talking to a knowledgeable breeder, riding instructor or trainer. Trainers see many, many horses and often these horses that are in training are up for sale by the owner. Some of these horses may be more expensive if the trainer is good, but they would still most likely have knowledge of other owners that are looking to sell. Also, be very wary of a rock bottom price tag when shopping. This might mean that there could be serious health or temperament problems with the horse. For example the horse could be foundered, which sometimes is not always easy to tell, or could be prone to bucking, rearing, or taking off with its rider. Temperament problems can sometimes be resolved but only by very experienced horsemen. Remember, before you buy have your vet do a full checkup for overall health and soundness of your horse and take the horse for a "test ride" before you buy. This could save you a lot of trouble later on. Good Luck!

You're not going to find a good barrel racing horse cheap. As for adopting, you'd better know what is expected of a barrel horse before you try that route. Barrel Racing is hard on a horses body and if they don't have the conformation for it you'll end up hurting them. If you want a barrel horse you're going to PAY for it.

If you can't afford to pay the going rate (which right now is very low), how will you treat the horse if it gets sick? There is no such thing as a cheap horse, if you are experienced enough to own one you should know that.
