He's not too old. I highly recommend the books by the Monks of New Skete. These monks have been training German Shepards to be rescue dogs for centuries. Start with "How to be Your Dog's Best Friend". I hope its still in print (from the 80's). They use dog training techniques that harness his inate animal behavor instincts. I've used these techniques to successfully train two of my dogs. They work!

Your dog is at the right age to train him. Well, you need to know your dog characteristic first. Then try to browse some tips in dog training thru the internet or try to enroll him to a dog training class. You need a lot of patience and time to train him but it's worthy when he become a well trained dog. "A well-trained dog is a happy and love dog."

Now I think is a real good time to try to train your dog. I know there are books that offer ways to train. I think the use of positive and negative reinforcement is a good way to train a young pup. Jsut don't beat or yell...patience is key. Good luck.

No dog is ever to old to train-6 months is just the right age for a puppy class. Go to your local petsmart or petco, they have fairly low cost classes.

You mean train as in like "sit" and "fetch"? If you are--it's easy!

Get a couple of treats and break them into very small pieces. Say the command, and when he does it give him a treat. Only give him a treat if he does it right after being told to. I don't know if this will work for you, but if worked for me! I tought my yellow lab how to sit in less than 10 minutes!
