I work at a bathing suit store where we sell both male and female swim suits but our clintelle is 99% female.

The other day at work a young man wanted to try some trunks on, so as I was getting a change room ready for him, my shift supervisor said he had to wait because he is a guy and to let a girl go in first.

I said, "WHAT!? That's sexist! Just because he's a boy he has to wait?

Keep in mind there was like a 5-10 minutes waitlist for a change room because it was crazy busy.

I let him in anyways and got in trouble. Was I right?

BTW, he only had 1 article to try on whereas the women were trying on like a million things...

And guess what her excuse was for not wanting him back there right away! She said, "The women may be self-conscious about trying on suits with men around"

CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?! If they were really so self conscious about men seeing them in bikinis, why are they buying them to wear on public beaches?

Yes, you were right to object if the reason he was told to wait was because he was male (and I'm not just saying that because I'm male). I'd have done the same thing!

You were partly right. It is also possible the issue for the supervisor was maximizing the day's sales. . . making the most hay when the sun is still shining. Unless there has been a pattern of sorts, it'd be better to be cautious branding other people's motives sexist!

Yes, you were absolutely right. A lot of people can't seem to realise that sexism works both ways, but you do. If that's your shift supervisor's attitude to male customers then I'm not surprised that your clientele is 99% female!

he is a person.. Just like everyone else.

I wouldnt have a problem with him using the change room..
Being a guy he would more than likely be faster than any girl.
So what would be the problem... Good on you for standing up for him...

Spot on your workplace is sexist, however whether it was lawful would depend on the legal system that has jurisdiction over the area

Sounds like you were fair and the management was not. Surprised the guy did not speak up for himself.

Women are more likely to buy what they try on...men just buy...it was more a marketing thing more than anything.

I think that is sexist and stupid. I always figured that unisex changing rooms were first come first served.

You were indeed right. Everyone should be respected, regardless of gender; and he was first. Shame on the management.
