It is the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Is it the exact date of His birth? Probably not.
Since the exact date of His birth was not given in the Bible, someone had to pick a date to have the celebration. They chose December 25th.
Your friend is confusing this picking of a date, with telling a lie. No one lied about it, they just didn't know the exact date.

Christmas[2] or Christmas Day[3][4] is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25 that commemorates the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.[5][6] The date of commemoration is not known to be Jesus' actual birthday, and may have initially been chosen to correspond with either a historical Roman festival[7] or the winter solstice.[8] Christmas is central to the Christmas and holiday season, and in Christianity marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days.[9] Although traditionally a Christian holiday, Christmas is widely celebrated by many non-Christians,[1][10] and some of its popular celebratory customs have pre-Christian or secular themes and origins. Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, music, an exchange of greeting cards, church celebrations, a special meal, and the display of various decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, and garlands, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly. In addition, Father Christmas (known as Santa Claus in North America, Australia and Ireland) is a popular mythological figure in many countries, associated with the bringing of gifts for children.[11] Because gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity among both Christians and non-Christians, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses. The economic impact of Christmas is a factor that has grown steadily over the past few centuries in many regions of the world.

No it is not the true birthday of Jesus. The emperor Constantine changed the date of the birth of Jesus to coincide with the celebration of the Persian God Mithra.

In the same decree he also changed the official christian day of worship to sun-day to honor the Sun God that he himself worshiped.

Goggle Mithra or origin of the bible and you will get some well written summaries of the events that surrounded these changes that Constantine made to Christianity.

Prior to the 4th century Christianity was very much about enlightening the common person with the true teachings of Jesus. After about 325 AD Christianity became more about subverting Jesus' true message and controlling the common man with Guilt about the Crucifixion.

She's exactly right. The Bible points to Jesus being born in the spring. One thing that leads to that conclusion is when it said that the shepperd's were out with their flocks. They would not have been able to do that had it been cold. Also, one of the main reasons ones celebrate Christmas at all is because of commercialism. Look at any holiday and usually that's the driving force behind it, money. If you really are interested in it, the encyclopedia has a lot of interesting information on the subject.

Not Jesus birthday. Just about everything with modern Christmas has pegan origins. Santa, Christmas trees, gift giving, the fact that it is near the winter solstis, etc. etc.

Christmas is a way to sell more stuff that most people don't really want or need, so that families can become more stressed out.

How many families would be like the who's down in whoville if the grinch stole all their goodies? Probably VERY few!

Christmas Day - December 25, was the day picked to celebrate the birth. In the second century, St Clement of Alexandria refers to a special feast on May 20, that could likely be the actual day. It really wasn't that big of a deal in the early Church. Easter was and still is the most important day to remember of our Lord's earthly mission.

My birthday is December 25.

The Annunciation of my birth occurred on March 25, which coincidentally was the 15th of the Hebrew month of Nissan in the year I was born, which is the start date of the Passover.

His birthday was probably sometime in the fall. We just take one day out of the year and celebrate it. If the day was really that important it would say so in the bible.

No, your friend is right, that Christmas is not really Jesus' birthday, his birthday is actually sometime around Easter. But I think that Christmas time is when the3 wise men came to visit him, because they actually came to visit him around 2 yrs. after his birth. Reread the Christmas story and things will make more sense chronologically!!!

We don't know what day of the year Jesus was born, but it's still a good thing to celebrate. Christ the Savior was born!
