I read its translated version somewhere some 20 years ago, it's one of Chinese quotes but it didn't state who said so. I suspect this famed saying might date back to some hundreds of years ago since there were the regular national examinations yearly held in search of the best scholars to serve the Emperors.

I'm afraid I've never heard that one before, but there is an (anonymous) Chinese proverb that says "Read ten thousand books, travel ten thousand miles."
