If you're trying to hook up speakers directly to a headphone jack, it won't work very well. Headphone jacks don't have enough power to fully drive a speaker. A small speaker you could hear some volume from, but you really need an amplifier to get a decent amount of sound out.

Yes. Technically a headphone is just that, "a small speaker". The only problem you may have is the type of device you are plugging your new small speaker into. And more specific, will it have the power to drive that speaker so you can hear it. Every audio device has an amplifier to move the speaker coil to produce sound. Small devices (iPod, Walkman, etc.) have very small amplifiers inside them, producing less than 1 watt of power. The larger the speaker, the more wattage needed to drive it.
Good Luck

its no longer probable smart to try this, because of the fact the headphone wires have this little ribbon form stuff wherein the relationship is working via that still. your greater valuable off going to love radio shack and getting a cable with the headphone plug on the tip, could only be bout $6

You can but it would be easier to get an adapter or just get new speakers.
