If you only have 1 parakeet, the egg is not fertile. The parakeet can still lay an egg even if there is no male around, but again it must be fertile to hatch. If she is not sitting on it, you can remove the egg.

Check out this site. I use it for our parakeets.

Get a male if you want to breed your parakeet and have baby parakeets. Otherwise, your female parakeet is fine as is. Nothing to worry about since she laid an egg.

This does happen somertimes with single females. If your parakeet is alone then you should leave the eggs with her for about three weeks. Then you can discard them. Let her have the satisfaction of sitting on the eggs. There's no real need to get a male, unless of course you are thinking of breeding them.(age of your bird). If she starts to lay often, your vet will be able to help with hormone therapy of kind.

I suggest you go do some reading at http://www.budgietalk.com It's a great online resource for parakeet owners.

Sometimes birds lay eggs just because. Most people keep it in the cage and let her sit on it until she's tired of it.

No, you should not get a male. Your bird doesn't necessarily want to breed, and you have a lot more learning to do before you attempt to breed her.

If you are happy with the one bird you don't need to get a second. Breeding parakeets takes a lot of experience and its time consuming so I wouldn't get another one just because you found out you have a female.

There's no need to get a male. Females will lay infertile eggs, as long as they have a nesting box. Do not get a male just to breed them, unless you are truly devoted and know how to find homes for the babies once they're old enough.

Apparently, you have a girl 'keet! :] this is normal, don't worry about it. just make sure that she has a good source of calcium (cuttlebone or crushed egg shells) so that if she keeps making eggs, she won't deplete her body of nutrients. keep her on a good diet of pellets, veggies and fruits. Also, it helps if you reduce the number of light hours she has (put her to bed earlier/wake her up later) for more info, i sugges you read BIRD TALK, a great magazine about pet birds and their care. they have a lot of this kind of stuff in there. hope this helps and good luck!
