my brother is going to california for Christmas and left me his cat to watch for 3 weeks. I already have 2 cats of my own and things are going well. as I already assumed...they hate eachother and now even my 2 cats hiss at eachother. Stewie (my brothers cat) wont eat or drink or even come out to use the litter box. I honestly dont think hes gone to the bathroom in 24 hours. if he has it was in the middle of the night and thats it since then. my question is....how can i get him to eat and come out from under the bed? if i take him out he cries then runs back into the bedrrom.

its not thats its cruel to keep him in a seperate room, but my place is so small the only room I could keep him in is the bathroom and thats the smallest room in the whole place. 2 people cant even be in there at the same time. my cats are fine...they like the couch anyways so they chill in the living room...I just want Stewie to eat something and use the litter box so i wont have to clean up a big mess.

Stewie isn't used to the environment. Cats can take a long time to get used to a new location, in this case since it's only temporary, he may not come around until the last week, if at all. Also, the fact that there are 2 cats doesn't help the situation. Stewie knows that it's not his house, and he's afraid of confrontation with your cats. A good idea would be to place a seperate litter box in whichever room he hides in, so he can feel comfortable going to the box. Another trick is to get the cats scents onto each other. You can do this by petting your cats with a towel and wiping his/her scent onto the new cat (and vice versa). This way the cats smell more familiar and less threatening to each other.

Cats don't do well with change. If you were keeping him longer I would say just give it time, but he probably won't adjust much within three weeks. He must be using the litter box some time or you'd have an exploding cat... or very stinky carpets. You could try putting his food and water bowl in your room, even under your bed where he likes to hide, since it will only be for a short time.
Another thing, if you can get Stewie's own litter box from your brothers place he would probably be more comfortable using that. The other cat's litter box smells like them and it is unfamiliar to Stewie. Cats like their own familiar smell.

You need to slowly introduce a new cat in a home with other cats - to begin keep them in seperate rooms - I suggest putting a litter box, food & water in the room he's hiding in, that can be his "safe" place & the other cats need to stay out. They need at least a few days to get use to the smell of each other thru the door. If it's possible put the other cats in a bedroom or someplace for a few minutes at a time & leave the door open to the room where he is & give him a chance to come out on his own, slowly & at his own pace, and sniff around - he will be getting use to their smell and he will be leaving his scent around. Then he goes back into "his room" and when the other cats come back out they will gradually begin to get use to his smell. Never force him to come out, he needs to feel secure & come at his own pace as his sense of security increases. I would give them a few days of this before having them in the same room together - and do not leave them in the same room unsupervised until you know what kind of reaction they will have. He will eat eventually when he gets hungry enough and his stress level goes down a little more - I would not worry about that. Your cats are upset that he's been brought into "their" home & he's upset because he is in a strange place... they need to take it slow & easy. This is all assuming he is an adult cat. Kittens are much more fragile & will need more care.

Angeldust your best bet is to put Stewie and his belongings in a room to himself the bathroom etc....somewhere the door can be closed. Away from your babies. As you know cats are very territorial animal. And if your 2 don't get along as is you might not want to throw Stewie in the mix. Just give him his own space till your brother comes home. Make the arrangements. Cause your babies might try to gang up on Stewie while you are not home. It is worth a try.

Actually, the kindest thing to do for Stewie is keep him in the spare room with his own food bowl, water bowl and cat litter box. He is in a new environent and is reacting in the NORMAL cat way - hiding. He'll do that until he is absolutely sure that the place is safe for him and that's NOT going to happen becuase you have two cats of your own and Stewie KNOWS that he is in their territory.
When I went to visit my brother in LA, I brought my cat with me. My brother has a little dog and a cat. My cat Kaffe kept to our room in the closet all the time - as I expected him to do. Kaffe just knew that the place was someone else's territory and he wasn't going to push it. So, I kept everyone happy by confining Kaffe in my room. I occassionally let him out to explore the living room and kitchen - but I first confined the other two pets in my brother's room. ALL the animals were aware of each other's presence - but since no one challenged anyone, the stress level was wayyyy down - for all of them.

Place him in a room by himself, where he's not bothered by the your cats. Maybe a spare bedroom or bathroom. Anywhere that's available. You should never just put a new cat in a home with previous cats. They have to be introduced over a period of time, until then, the new cat needs it's own room, and a closed door to prevent him from interacting with your cats, but that they can still smell each other.

I don't think it would be cruel to separate him from the other cats. He's obviously under a lot of stress and would probably feel safer if he could move around one room without running into the other cats. Since he is only "visiting", I think giving him his own space would be the easiest solution.
