put shoes in them...or small items...they are useful and easy to fill....

Moving time is a good opportunity to dump stuff that is no longer needed. Do you really need to take your shoe boxes to your new place?

As a box keeper, it would be hard to throw them away, as you could use them later to put stuff in or wrap presents in. But, it probably would be easier to throw them away.
