they're really tiny, and most of them are in tiny itty bity curls or bean shapes, almost like some form of bugs, but none of them moving. He is a very happy, healthy, clean cat. What could they be?

Sounds like flea poo. If you can try to get some wet, and it turns red, it's fleas for sure. There are alternatives to pesticides like Advantage. Garlic and Brewer's Yeast works wonders for cats (and dogs too) that have fleas. The trick is trying to figure out how to get them to eat it. Sometimes you can hide it in canned food, but sometimes finicky kitties can smell there is something different there and will not eat it. If you can get your cat to eat these two ingredients regularly, eventually the fleas will lessen or go away all together because they don't like the effects the garlic and brewers yeast has. There is a wonderful product made that I use, called "PetGuard" which you can find in natural/health food stores. What it is, is chewable tablets (that look alot like a chewable vitamin C) which contain garlic and brewers yeast. I give one to my cat every morning and he doesn't get fleas anymore. They don't smell unpleasant at all, and the cat just gobbles them right up like a kitty treat. I started using this natural method because the traditional pesticide "Advantage" and other types were making my kitty sick, and I wanted to try something else as a natural alternative.

Its probably flea dirt, and fleas are hard to get rid of. First off, treat your cat, comb him, and he won't like it, but a flea bath. Keep combing your cat daily until you find very little flea dirt on him. Its best to completely spray your house too, and wash everything he lays on often in the hottest water possible to kill any fleas that may be hiding (they and their eggs fall off very easily) You'll need to vacuum all carpeted surfaces too, at least a couple times a week for about a month, and make sure to clean the vac um well, fleas can survive in them. Sometimes even this won't help, then it may be necessary to get a bug bomb that kills fleas, these are a pain though because and the pet have to be out of the house for several hours, and then you need to make sure he doesn't bring any more fleas in. Good luck!

It sounds like "flea dirt." Which is essentially, flea poop. Cats can be meticulously clean and still have fleas. Take a sample of the specks on a piece of paper, take a white plate and dampen it with water, drop the specks onto the damp plate. If the specks dissolve or have a red tint to them, it's flea dirt. Frontline and Advantage are wonderful ways to get rid of fleas very easily, and it's also a good idea to worm your cat at the same time with Drontal, if he's swallowed a flea, he will have worms.

Those tiny black specks are flea droppings - a sure sign that Sam has fleas. Treat him for fleas and wash all beddings that Sam lays on. I used Advantage on my cats just once - i mean just one application. That was last July and we are still flea-free.

its flea dirt. a simple solution is give your cat a bath then afterwards get a flea comb & comb him with it. that should get any dead fleas or flea dirt that didnt come off. you can get a flea comb in the pet section at wal-mart! & if you dont want to use an expensive kitty shampoo then get dawn dishwasing liquid! it works great! then you can get some baby powder & sprinkle it on him to keep the fleas off. it works great for my 3 cats!!!

Check him for fleas. Whether or not you actually see fleas on your pet, they may be there. Scratching, scabs and dark specs, or "flea dirt," found on the skin can all be signs that your pet has become the unwitting host for a family of fleas.

Generally, I would suspect flea or ear mite debris, since that is what those look like. Does he ever shake his head or paw at his ears or otherwise show distress like that?
