my dog does the same. she hates the rats and she dont want them around. so when ever she hears one she cries till it comes out. i dont know if u herd of this foam stuff, but its in a green bottle and u have to shake it for 30 seconds, then u have the stuff squark out and put it on the holes(if any) and let it dry and the rats dont dare to eat it. im nt sure why. we did it and for anout 2 months now the rats have been gone. so were happy about that. and we used decon. and that also helped.

It's not gross. Rats are clever and they will get in anywhere. Especially older houses. You can go with poison or traditional traps, but the disadvantage of those is the dead rats in the walls... Now, that's gross. And smelly.
My preference is to use humane traps. You can get them at the hardware store, bait them with some peanut butter, and when a rodent wanders in, just take it out to a field (or the home of someone you dislike j/k) and let it go. It will settle somewhere else and not stink up your house.
Your dog probably won't get rabies if the vaccinations are current, the vaccine is VERY reliable.

Rabies is only carried by mammals, not rodents....don't worry about the rabies.
If your dog is eating or mouthing the dead rats, do not use an ingestable poison. Most deaths from rat/mouse poison occurs, in pets, from eating the rodent that died from the poison rather than eating poison itself. You need to use traps. Pellet guns, work well....if you are a good shot and you follow the laws.
Do major housekeeping, if you are feeding your dog outside stop. Use a metal garbage can for your garbage and dog food. If you cut off a rat's food supply they will move elsewhere.
If there was disruption in ground due to constriction, sewer cleaning contact (which stirred up the living quaters of these creatures) your local health department. They are responsible for this type of problem. In most cases the town or city will inforce rat clean up duties on the party who did the ground disturbance.

If your dog has rabies shots, then she won't get rabies. My dog just killed a big rat. Try prevention, clean up old dog food, don't let it lie outside at night, make sure to clean up the poop (or bury it or throw it far away from the premises, rats can eat that too).

I have had mice, and my aunt has had rats. She set up rat traps, and the live rat traps at Hardware store. She got rid of them, same with my mice, live and mouse traps. Also your dog cannot get rabies if it has has a rabies shot.

Rabies from rats is very rare and has never been documented in the United States.
Rabies transmission from rats is extremely rare, not because rats have a dry bite, but because they almost never carry rabies, presumably because rats do not survive the attack of a rabid animal.

I'd set traps as well, but, it sounds like your dog's doing a good job of protecting you from them. Just make sure the dog's shots are all up to date. Killing rats shouldn't cause too much risk to your dog.

you can always let your dog kill the rats since rats arent known to carry rabies and it has never been documented in the united states.
you can just buy rat poisin and put it next to some chips. We did that and the rat ate it overnight and died the next day. ;)

set your bag of dog food out and sneak up on them when their inside and close it. then take a baseball bat and bash their little rat brains out. this may seem cruel but trust me rats really enjoy the effort you take to share a little food and time with them:)

LITTLE KNOWN FACT, RATS ARE NOT BIG CARRIEERS OF RABIES. YOU DO HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE PLAUGE, RATS CARRY IT AND IT IS STILL AROUND.
