I am a female who loves trains, especially elevated/subway trains. I'm wondering if I'm the only woman that does, or what. Not knowing of any others, makes me feel like an outcast. In fact, I've even applied to be a motorman(Combined Rail Operator), for the Chicago Transit Authority!

You are definitely not alone as a female railfan, but you are in an extreme minority.

However, be positive. Several weeks ago, I had my picture taken by a female fan, and I was quite surprised. Well dressed (no sweat pants, etc.), looked presentable, and no hideous deformities. What I'm getting at is this female could accurately be described as "normal" (you can't always say the same for the males).

If you enjoy the hobby, stay the course, and have fun with it. Remember to wave and smile at the train crews - I brag to my co-workers every time a nice looking girl waves to my train. :-)

I am one!!!! I have learned that it is more of a "boy's club" thought. You would think it would be a good way to pick up a guy. I am more into the steam locomotive and passenger trains. It's a fairly new hobby for me, but I am enjoying getting to know more and more about trains. I can understand your feeling like an outcast. I thought I was the only female railfan out there!
