I fast for about 5 to 7 days every 2 months taking only water. I do it because it makes you feel a lot better.

It flushes all of the excess salt and other toxins out of your system. Without all of that salt your body releases any excess water that is being stored.

By the third day it's unbelievable how much better you feel. I lost 29 lbs in only 9 days once.

It takes a couple of months to build the salt back up, then you feel like crap again and its time to do it again.

I checked with my Dr. and he said it was ok to do it.

Love and blessings Don

Fasting isn't stupid at all.
For meditation, fasting is a way of quieting the body as well as the mind. When you've just eaten a huge meal, meditation is quite difficult. Even a few hours after, the digestive system is busy moving food about, the stomach and intestines are churning, etc.

Fasting for a bit longer can help in achieving mental states that are difficult when satiated.

Many Christians fast, following the model of Christ.

Many other religions fast as a means of denying the body to strengthen the spirit.

For those who haven't experienced it in a spiritual fashion, it may seem stupid, just as not believing in a God seems stupid to one of faith.

Lack of experience with a thing is not sufficient cause to call it stupid.

I fast for many reasons. Spirtual awareness, giving my digestive system a rest, and the pure satisfaction of accomplishment towards feeling better. I usually fast for 5 days following the holidays to really jump start the new year and give my body some much needed gentleness. Remember though, any idiot can fast but it takes wisdom to break a fast correctly. Charity doesn't figure into it unless you consider the food I am not eating is potentially going to feed someone else. Probably not as it seems Americans throw away just as much food as they eat (if you ever worked in a restaurant you would know this). Side note...weight loss, while usually desirable, is not my own goal when it comes to fasting.

Fasting is very healthy. The longer the fast the better (within reason). Fasting for a charity is stupid-I agree. But for health/spiritual its great.
BTW fasting means water only-no nothing else.

Selfishness is the root to all evil, and the act of fasting is denial of ones own needs in order to express they're fighting against evil. Doing good works at the same time is an excellent sacrifice and expresses the love of others.
It's all in the mindset of an individual, and if you can't appreciate it you will think it's stupid ... but consider if you had a child or something, and your child needed to eat and you only had enough to feed one but not both ... most people who love their children will feed the child and refrain from the meal themselves.

I really think you don't really think it's stupid when you realize it's an expression of love.

I'm taught in Islam that it purifies the soul, it also provides an avenue for the fortunate to feel and share the pain induced by hunger felt by the less fortunate(poor). Finally my own understanding of fasting is it is also a test by God. He gives us instructions not to eat until a certain period of the day, no matter how hungry you may be. It helps you in surrendering to His Almighty Will. We begin our fast at dawn, maybe about 5am till a quarter past six in the evening. You are only allowed to eat or drink btw dusk and dawn, for thrity days.

Some doctors believe that pure water fasting can not only detoxify cells and rejuvenate organs, but can actually cure such diseases and conditions as cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, colitis, psoriasis, lupis and some other autoimmune disorders when combined with a healthy diet. They believe that "Fasting is Nature's Restorer."[2]

Sometimes people fast to show solidarity with others. Sometimes it's to cleanse their bodies or achieve clarity of mind divorced from their corporeal urges and needs. Various Native Americans undertook vision quests in which they would fast to find their spirit guide. There are many reasons people fast and you would do well to investigate and think about them before so arrogantly and immaturely dismissing them.

It is giving up something to make a sacrifice. To help one clear ones mind.So you feel that it is stupid? It's not for you ,don't worry about why other people do it. If fasting works for someone else that their business and it's not nice for you to say that they are stupid.

What's stupid is making a statement that is really an opinion.

Read some books on the and then come back with a question like this.

I'm an atheist.......you don't have to agree to understand the basis.
