If your speaking about the attacks of September 11th then why shouldn't atheists join in the moment of silence? This happened to our country. People of many faiths died and you do not need to be anything or everything to be a part of that.

Christians (at least some of them) would have a moment of silence, a moment of remembrance for those who were killed, and a moment of prayer for the families of the ones who died.
Those of other religions might pray to their gods in similar fashion, (though we would say their gods do not hear).
Atheists? I can't see any problem with thinking of them having a moment of silence, remembering. Remembering what happened, thinking of all those who, they believe, perished. And, I would hope, also think of how they, too, might help the survivors.

Not all of us. I don't. I am sorry they died. I am sorry 1500 men and women died at pearl harbour. I am sorry 55,000 soldiers died in Vietnam , I am sorry over 3000 troops have died in Iraq and Afghanistan but I don't hold a moment of silence for those of 911 in particular.
I can not under stand why we were supposed to make all of the victims families millionaires either. I can not understand why so many of the survivors bitched about the fire fighters and policeman's families getting money for having lost a family there, but immediately began a campaign to make themselves richer.
It's time to bury the 911 victims and let them rest in peace. The same of it that so many of them would be ashamed to know how some of their realtives have used their death to enrich themselves.
If you want to hold a moment of silence do it for the troops in Iraq, and Afganistan. And hope they return in good health. Let the 911 dead remain dead and in peace.

The silence isn't about faith, it's about respect. I'm not saying that I bow my head or anything though. People die all the time in accidents and in selfish actions and no one gives a crap about them. Maybe we should rejoice that their suffering ended and that perhaps they will come beck one day. At least that's what I believe.
I think the respect part is foolish too because I won't respect people I never knew. Then I should respect everyone alive because we will all die one day and no one is better than anybody else.

I don't think having a moment of silence on 9/11 is a religious practice, but more of a remembrance of those who died in that unthinkable act. I think remembering those who perished crosses the bounds of defined religion.

What a brave, civil, courageous, thing you did. Wow! I'm proud of you. I guess by saying your atheist and had a moment of silence should surprise us. Does that mean that you went way out on a limb because atheist's shouldn't honor such a thing? You did yourself real proud.

Why wouldn't they? Atheists have hearts too. Moments of silence are symbolic representations of respect.

Sure they do. It is about respect, not god. Respect and remembering those who perished. anyone claiming only those who believe in god should have a moment of silence are completely ridiculous.
