"kudos" is an expression describing praise, approval and admiration. It is a Greek word and means "magical glory". When you are in the position of being applauded by everyone, you can enjoy the kudos of the moment.

"Alas" is an expression of regret. It is a sad sound a little like somebody sobbing. You could paraphrase it as "it's very sad"!

Kudos (IPA: ['kü-"däs], ['kju:dɒs], from the Greek κύδος kydos (literally "that which is heard of") means fame and renown resulting from an act or achievement; by extension is often used as a praising remark. It entered English as British university slang in the early 1800s. Frequently used by Time magazine, it came to Africa in the 1920s and 1930s.[citation needed]

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary states, "Some commentators hold that since kudos is a singular word it cannot be used as a plural and that the word kudo is impossible. But kudo does exist in use; it is simply one of the most recent words created by back-formation from another word misunderstood as a plural. Kudos was introduced into English in the 19th century; it was used in contexts where a reader unfamiliar with Greek could not be sure whether it was singular or plural. By the 1920s it began to appear as a plural, and about 25 years later kudo began to appear. It may have begun as a misunderstanding, but then so did cherry and pea."
The term alas may refer to—

an interjection used to express regret, sorrow, or grief.
in geomorphology, a steep-sided depression formed by the melting of permafrost; it may contain a lake.
in zoology, a wing or winglike body part.
Alas (East Timor), a subdistrict of the district Manufahi in East Timor.
Alas!, a work of literature by Rhoda Broughton.
AlAs, aluminium arsenide
ALAS, a small Colombian political party mainly based in the city of Valledupar.
the Spanish writer Leopoldo Alas y Ureña

An interjection is a part of speech that usually has no grammatical connection to the rest of the sentence and simply expresses emotion on the part of the speaker, although most interjections have clear definitions. Filled pauses such as uh, er, um, are also considered interjections. Interjections are generally uninflected function words and have sometimes been seen as sentence-words, since they can replace or be replaced by a whole sentence (they are holophrastic). Sometimes, however, interjections combine with other words to form sentences, but not with finite verbs.

Interjections are used when the speaker encounters events that cause these emotions — unexpectedly, painfully, surprisingly or in many other sudden ways. But several languages have interjections that cannot be related to emotions.

The word "interjection" literally means "thrown in between" from the Latin inter ("between") and iacere ("throw").

"Kudos" basically means "You did very well" or "Thank you". "Alas" is an archaic expression that signifies disappointment.

"Alas, I could not find my other shoe and so I had to stay home from the dance."
