The navy is a branch of our armed forces. It deals mostly with water vessals. Ships and submarines, but they do have some planes.

its the protector of the seas...they got naval aviation too for their aircraft carriers
basically though they protect vital shipping and commerce (or actualy that could be some coast guard) and more importantly they can attack the trade of other nations during war, helps out wiht sinking supply ships and stuff so it dont get to the army
plus they can shell the crap outta coastal cities, and are essential for huge invasions so you can land a lot of armor, artillery, and infantry by placing them on ships and then invading beaches and stuff (most famous and biggest : D-Day)
so yah they hav a pretty damn important role in this country or basiclay any others
