I don't know about the Christian right or the Christian left ... and I doubt that Jesus set out any "traditions". Rather, in His Sermon on the Mount and Sermon On The Plain, He was stating the "Manifesto Of The Kingdom", though they also provide very good guidelines for this time before the Kingdom!

Those were not exactly traditions. They were instructions. Descriptions of the Christian who truly reflects Jesus.
I believe we need to take each Christian individually, and not classify all of those on the political right one way, and all those on the political left in another way. There are real honest, sincere, loving Christians on both sides of the political question.
We would do well to follow what Jesus said: "Judge not tha tye be not judged."
On the other hand, too many of those on the right who are extremely vocal are not following the sermon on the mount. But then again, on the vocal left one might have trouble finding sermon-on-the-mount people too!

Wasn't Jesus teaching Jews and trying to prepare them for the New covenant? I don't think there were any Christians there.

No, they don't. Today they're catho-alcoholics or portesto-alcoholics. they get crunk everynight and we have the right to rebuke them until they repent, then we will forgive them...
There's no new covenant, he was preaching the same message that's is worship one god. Paul is the one who created the so-called "new covenant" which actually curse the holy law of moses.
